Following my earlier visit to the South West, I ventured north to the East Midlands on 17 & 18th September and called in to see 4 members in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire areas. Again the opportunity was taken for mutual discussions on a wide range of topics with workload being top of the agenda. Once more it was pleasing to report some cautious optimism although there was little expectation that workload turnover levels would return to those of 2006 and 2007 for some time. It was interesting to note that many clients were under the false impression that because things were tough in the joinery trade, their expectations of members with regard delivery times were often unrealistic with jobs being needed either ‘yesterday’ or within a time that could sensibly be scheduled. Other common topic areas included the health & safety issues including dust extraction & health surveillance together with various employment issues, the difficulties with late payment and bad debts, etc. A number specific company queries were also addressed. I also was able to update members on current BWF activities such as the recent upgrade of the new BWF website credit checking facility and insurance offer. Additionally the current BWF Waste Management Project was of interest to a number of members. I try to visit as many of our members as possible each year, getting valuable opinions on the state of the industry and how the BWF should be helping. If you want to like a visit, then don’t hesitate to get in touch and I will try to arrange a date to drop in at your workplace. Now back in the office this week before heading to the North West for another series of member visits.
