Although due to time constraints, I only able to see 6 members in the Somerset area on this occasion, such visits are ideal opportunities for mutual discussions on a wide range of topics and these visits were no exception. The common theme of the discussions was of course workload with members pleasingly reporting some cautious optimism following an extremely difficult 9-12 months. Other common topic areas included the health & safety issues including dust extraction & health surveillance together with various employment issues, the troublesome difficulties associated with bad debts, late payment etc. A number specific company queries were also addressed. I also was able to update members on current BWF activity with regard to the efforts of the WITForum to tackle the training predicament facing our industry today, the help we can provide though our Total Support Services and the widening range of membership services. Next week I will be heading to the East Midlands for another series of member visits. Travelling between the South West and the East Midlands and the North East recently has really brought home the country-wide impact of the downturn – the resilience of BWF members has however has been very much apparent.  Although trade overall remains volatile it is pleasing to note these recent signs that at least next year may not be as bad as previously anticipated.
